Craft the language to be a bit more inspirational.
The document reads as though it were written by a committee (which it was). It would be good to have some language that is a bit more evocative, resonant, and inspirational.

Mission and Mandate document is ultra mild
I think that the first draft of the Mission and Mandate document is ultra mild. Simply put, it did not inspire me. It sounds like a descriptive statement to what we were versus what we should be.
The purpose of a mission statement is primarily to attract students and secondly to be used as a guideline in the hiring and tenure process. It could also be used when a faculty member does not meet the ethical standard.
Having said that, I think we could rewrite a more effective Mission statement.
1. The first step is to think about the basic… more25 votes -
"Kwantlen: where we help you succeed"
I think the above is our real mission.
The draft "Mission & Mandate" tells how we're going to do it, or how we're going to act as we do it, but it doesn't say much about what we're aiming to do for our students and potential students. I think the statement as drafted gives us good policy guidelines, and outlines a great deal of what we hope - I hope - we're going to do internally to ensure that Kwantlen becomes or remains an excellent post-secondary institution. Maybe it even comprises mission statements for various support divisions and administrative processes… more

Keep the strong emphasis on teaching.
The paragraph on teaching is the longest one in the document (I think). That's good. Teaching is foundational to Kwantlen, and this should be reflected in these types of documents.

Keep using 'learner' instead of 'student'.
This seems like an important philosophical distinction, and is consistent with forward-thinking educational models. I like it.

Connection between faculty and students
As a mature student returning to the college/university environment, I found the connection between the faculty and students to be an integral part of my success at Kwantlen and a key part of what makes Kwantlen stand out in the learning community.

Scrap the right-wing notion that KPU should "respond" to "industry" and the "market".
KPU should be more clearly defined as a *public* institution. Our aim is to develop the human potential of individuals. We serve citizens, communities and society - people - not private industry or the market. Market is an especially innapropriate term. It is code for dominant social interests. When we respond to industry and labour market conditions it should be from the point of view of opportunities for students and the needs of society.

Bias for "community" research raises serious concerns about academic freedom.
*One* type of research should not be "constitutionized" in this statement, especially a *minority* type.
Whatever the merit of particular instances of "community-based" research to date, I see no evidence this orientation has proven its value or potential over the 'non-community' research being done.
Phrases like "honour and reward" for *one* type of research mean less honour and reward for *other* types of research.
My own current projects (statistical analysis of population health in the US, and merging two large databases on corporate ownership in Canada) don't lend themselves to involving "learners" and the "community" in "research design"(!!), even if… more

Make a stronger emphasis on sustainability
Sustainability should be a focus that underlies everything we do. Programming and curriculum, facility design and maintenance, and policy and procedure should all reflect (in concrete, practical ways) our belief in the importance of this focus.

who's the audience? Let's write this to the people in our region
While the document covers a variety of valid and important points, it seems to me to be written for an audience of professors or deputy ministers. Let's edit it to cover the same points* in a way that's user-friendly, using the active voice and clear language, and that says what we're going to do here that will benefit the residents south Fraser region (and the rest of BC and beyond wherever we can, of course).

Prefer active verbs
I like the prominence, and the content, of the Learning Environment section, but revisiting it now, it does seem burdened with passive verbs. For example, designing and leading an experiential learning component requires more expertise and intention than "expos(ing) learners" seems to imply. Throughout this section, some active verbs would emphasize and celebrate the contributions of our faculty (and staff) to the learning environment.

make it possible for mature, working students to earn a bachelors degree
It's great that a lot of psych and creative writing classes are offered online (as these are my favorite areas, but it still does not seem possible to earn a degree in this manner, nor is it possible in all disciplines.
SFU has an MBA program designed for this population, but let's find a way to make education available to *everyone*.
Have science classes online with weekend in-person labs. Use podcasts for lectures.

Really like the emphasis on global citizenship! Is
Is there a way we can have some discussion of what we mean by this and how global citizenship might be integrated into our programs and activities?

write the mission to describe what we do, not who we are
change the "is" verbs to action verbs: for instance, for the first sentence, make it "Kwantlen Polytechnic University integrates practical and applied educational experiences..."

have a strongly articulated plan in terms of 'innovation' if it's going to be such a prominent idea
I like the way 'innovation' is emphasized in the mission but at present we aren't really that technologically innovative, esp compared to other institutions. I'd like to see innovative changes in our technological presence (webcasts of classes etc) that coincide with the presentation of the mission statement.

Dialogue needed about leadership areas Kwantlen can take in post secondary.
I suggest that Kwantlen engages in significant dialogue about the areas of leadership it could take in the post secondary environment in BC. The outcome of these dialogues should be part of the mission statement. Sustainability issues could be one idea for Kwantlen and access to university or adult education (a long standing tradition at Kwantlen) is another area in which Kwantlen could take leadership roles.

Hope kwantlen university have a photography diploma
I am a student in Kwantlen and is currently in the fine arts department. Since Kwantlen have all the equipment for photography. It would be nice if kwantlen can open a photography diploma. Emily carr and langara have good photography programs, but I really don't want to transfer because I like and is familiar with kwanlen.

Ordering transcripts online.
Langara College and SFU have a nifty system where students can order transcripts online.
Kwantlen needs you to visit the registrar in person or fill out a form and scan it by hand for e-mailing.
I suggest Kwantlen do the same. It makes our lives easier. Especially for students who are not near Kwantlen anymore or don't have access to a scanner or fax.
